FRIENDS' Testimony:

Architect Percival Goodman is considered a leading theorist of Modern synagogue design. At Fifth Avenue Synagogue, as in many of his designs, he sought to interpret Jewish tradition in modern ways.

FRIENDS understands the need and applauds the applicant for making the roof-top playground and penthouse apartment accessible. In addition, we appreciate the concern with the neighboring building light-shaft, and the subdued color palette of the proposed bulkhead. However, FRIENDS’ Preservation Committee believes it to be excessively large and visible. The proposed addition will significantly interfere with the building’s strong cornice, severely altering the modern design.

FRIENDS encourages the applicant to work with the Commission to find an alternate solution for the accessibility problem, one that is less intrusive and visible.
