ALWAYS SHAPED BY IMMIGRANTS:
Celebrating Immigrant-Owned Businesses in Yorkville

FRIENDS of the Upper East Side is proud to introduce Always Shaped by Immigrants, a new digital media series celebrating contemporary immigrant-owned small business across Yorkville!

In 2018, FRIENDS published Shaped By Immigrants: A History of Yorkville, documenting the history and legacy of the neighborhood’s 19th and 20th Century immigrant communities. Always Shaped by Immigrants continues that story into the present, highlighting how current residents from across the world inherit and build upon that history, continuing to make Yorkville such a wonderful place to live and work.

Throughout this series FRIENDS joins business owners at their places of business. Through interviews, videos, and images, the owners in this series share stories of building their businesses in the neighborhood, and offer their wide-ranging professional expertise.

FRIENDS is grateful to all the local business owners who have already participated in this project! We are excited to continue interviews throughout the year.

FRIENDS will highlight participating local businesses here on our website, as well as on our social channels, as we post videos, audio interviews, articles and images. Newsletter subscribers will find each new installment of this project in their inboxes! Subscribe and never miss a story!

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
