FRIENDS' Letter:
FRIENDS writes in support of the application to amend Certificate of Appropriateness 26-01403 (LPC 26-01403) to revise the installations at the sunken garden. Our Preservation Committee believes the proposed revision represents a clear improvement over the previously approved design. The current proposal is less conspicuous and will be less visible from street level, thereby better respecting the surrounding historic context.
We also appreciate that the bar will not be bolted into the ground and will instead be freestanding. This approach avoids unnecessary intervention and preserves the integrity of the existing bluestone, without introducing permanent alterations such as bolt holes.
Finally, we support the use of a high-polished surface, which clearly distinguishes the new bar from the original Brutalist walls. By identifying itself as a contemporary addition rather than mimicking the original Breuer design, the proposal maintains a disciplined and respectful contrast.
