FRIENDS' CB8 Testimony:

FRIENDS’ Preservation Committee objects to this application. This rowhouse reflects distinct elements of Colonial Revival and Arts & Crafts design. While the proposed balconies and entrance doors may be more appropriate for a Beaux-Arts building, they are fundamentally incompatible with the architectural character of this residence.

The proposed balconies, with their ornate floral ironwork and prominent corner posts, are not appropriate in this context. The existing Juliet balconies are consistent with the building's architectural style and should be retained. In particular, the Georgian-inspired oval rosettes within the ironwork appear to be original features. The existing balcony railings also complement the ironwork of neighboring rowhouses, reinforcing the architectural continuity of the streetscape. We urge the Commission to require retention of the existing balcony railings.

The proposed replacement doors are likewise inappropriate. Their overly elaborate design is out of character with the restrained architecture of the building and does not harmonize with the historic fabric of the Treadwell Farm Historic District. The Commission should require replacement doors that are architecturally compatible with both this rowhouse and the surrounding district.
