FRIENDS' Testimony:
Number 175 East 73rd Street is a unique survivor as it is one of two remaining Italianate rowhouses on the north side of East 73rd Street as well as an individual landmark. FRIENDS’ Preservation Committee is pleased to see that subtle façade features such as the round-arched third floor windows and the original window dimensions are being restored, and that the later-added through wall vents will be removed, bricked-in, and painted to match the existing façade.
The committee was also relieved to see that this updated proposal includes fenestration on the rear façade extension, a common visual characteristic of 19th century residences. The three bays on the first and second floors are reminiscent of the residential use for which this house was constructed, and will maintain that sense although the use is changing.
