The Landmarks Preservation Commission today took action to protect the Breuer building (the former Whitney Museum) on Madison Avenue, by voting to calendar it for consideration as both an individual and interior landmark.
While the Breuer Building's location on Madison Avenue within the Upper East Side Historic District offers protection to the building's exterior, these new landmark designations—covering both the exterior and interior—would provide vital additional safeguards. Without interior landmark designation, the interior spaces, equally integral to Breuer's vision, remained unprotected. The iconic lobby and the staircases (housing Simonds' clay village installations) for instance could be at risk of alteration or destruction.
FRIENDS has long advocated for interior landmark designation for the Breuer building, and have supported efforts by DOCOMOMO to have the Landmarks Preservation Commission evaluate the interiors for designation. Landmarking this building preserves both its architectural and cultural significance, including Breuer's contribution to New York City.
Background and Significance
The iconic Breuer Building, located at 945 Madison Avenue, is a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by Bauhaus master Marcel Breuer. The building's design seamlessly integrates interior and exterior elements. From the pedestrian bridge leading into the meticulously designed lobby to the lower levels and gallery spaces, Breuer's vision is evident throughout. The interior spaces, including artist Charles Simonds' installations, are as much a part of the architectural experience as the facade. Since its opening in 1966, the public has enjoyed uninterrupted access to this remarkable space, which remained largely unaltered until the Frick Collection vacated the building in March 2024. This unique combination of architectural significance and public accessibility makes the Breuer Building a truly exceptional landmark.
The auction house Sotheby's purchased the Breuer Building in June 2023. Recent news of the building's potential renovation further underscores the urgency of interior landmark designation.
FRIENDS will be closely following the LPC schedule for a public hearing. Stay tuned for details on how you can participate.
