FRIENDS' Testimony:

FRIENDS Preservation Committee can approve the façade alteration and storefront infill, which involves removing a column and bulkheads and adding two steel columns. We commend the inclusion of the elevation rendering for the entire block as part of the application, which effectively illustrates the “pattern language” of a vibrant and engaging Upper East Side block. The historical images of façade alterations provide a comprehensive record of how this building has evolved organically over time (including the removal of brick base in 1985 to accommodate another fashion house, Valentino, in 1985). Our Preservation Committee finds the current proposal appropriate as the alteration does not necessitate the removal of any historic materials, and the proposed facade aligns with contemporary design aesthetics. We also appreciate that the base will be recladded with red brick in Flemish bond, consistent with the building's neo-Federal character and harmonizing with the adjacent building.

The Committee remains uncertain about the slanted black aluminum architectural fins as a replacement for traditional awnings. Awnings are functional façade elements that provide weather protection, but the current design of fins with gaps between them does not seem to serve this purpose.
