FRIENDS' Testimony:
FRIENDS Preservation Committee is pleased to see the revitalization of the former Whitney Museum building and supports the proposed sculpture garden project, recognizing its potential to bring new life to the sunken plaza visible from street level. The inclusion of removable furniture is a welcome improvement that enhances the space’s usability. However, we would also encourage the return of sculptural displays to the space to fully reactivate the site and honor its original purpose.
FRIENDS fully supports the restoration of original architectural elements, including handrails, concrete stairs, and bronze doors on the south end of the Madison Avenue façade's secondary egress. These are vital for preserving the building's historic integrity.
Our Preservation Committee does have concerns regarding certain other aspects of the proposal. The existing party wall is integral to the architectural grandeur of this iconic Breuer structure, framing the entryway and defining its Brutalist character. Consequently, we object to the proposed signage and lighting fixture above it, as they are out of scale with the wall's monumental nature and detract from its austere visual impact. FRIENDS also opposes the introduction of eight fixed planters with integrated lighting at the secondary entrance. These elements are visually intrusive and incompatible with the building's restrained design vocabulary. We ask the applicant to pursue a more discreet lighting strategy that avoids permanent additions and respects the integrity of this remarkable architectural space.
