FRIENDS' Testimony:
FRIENDS’ Preservation Committee questions whether abandoning the historic window configuration is truly justified. We would have welcomed a study comparing the energy savings achievable through the restoration of the existing wood-sash windows with the energy costs and environmental impact of replacing them with high-embodied-energy aluminum tilt-and-turn windows.
FRIENDS would prefer wood-sash window replacements for both the front and rear facades and retaining the curved form of the rear-yard curved-sash windows. However, we are open to the compromise proposed by our colleagues at Carnegie Hill Neighbors, which would allow for different treatments on the front and rear facades—specifically, preserving or replicating the original wood-sash windows on the front façade, while permitting aluminum tilt-and-turn replacements on the rear.
