Upper East Side Modern

Modern architecture lovers, rejoice! The Upper East Side isn’t just Beaux-Arts grandeur and historic townhouses, there is a fascinating modernist story hiding in plain sight.

Join FRIENDS and John Arbuckle (Assoc. AIA, President of DOCOMOMO US/New York Tri-State) for a walking tour exploring important examples of Modern architecture amidst the celebrated array of Beaux Arts, Colonial Revival, and other landmarks of the Upper East Side.  Discover Modern highlights in the East 60s and 70s, both in and near the Upper East Side Historic District, including some of New York’s earliest remaining examples. The tour will visit residential and institutional buildings designed by William Lescaze, Philip Johnson, Edward Durell Stone, Paul Rudolph, Gordon Bunshaft of SOM, Marcel Breuer, and others.
