Roosevelt Island Lighthouse Tour

Join FRIENDS and architect Thomas A. Fenniman for a tour of the newly restored Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, recipient of the FRIENDS 2023 Rehabilitation Award. Completed in 2022 after a years-long project initiated by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, the rehabilitation of the Roosevelt Island lighthouse by Thomas Fenniman and his team reflects a true preservation undertaking that gave consideration to the history, significance and current use of the site, breathing new life into a beloved local landmark. Register using the form below.

Designed by James Renwick Jr., the Roosevelt Island lighthouse was constructed in 1872 on the northern tip of the island to aid ships navigating the then treacherous waters of the East River. It was decommissioned in 1940 and designated a New York City landmark in 1976 and incorporated into the 3-acre Lighthouse Park. Over the years, it had fallen into disrepair and subject to inappropriate repairs and alterations. Join us to learn about the complex and challenging project, requiring a delicate balance of historic preservation and modern engineering, that has included the repair of historic materials and introduction of new elements, including new lighting, that ensure its longevity and continued use as a source of light and visibility on the East River.
