Book Talk: Saving Stuyvesant Town

Preservation can mean saving architectural treasures. It can also mean saving and supporting communities by keeping people in their homes, and keeping those homes affordable. Some of the most tenacious battles in New York’s preservation history have been between community activists and real estate developers around the price and availability of middle-income housing. The largest battle of that kind in the City’s history was waged by residents of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, and won, in part, by Daniel Garodnick, who served as city councilman for the East Side from 2005-2017. Join FRIENDS virtually as we welcome Garodnick for a discussion of his new book, Saving Stuyvesant Town: How One Community Defeated the Worst Real Estate Deal in History. We will delve into the history of the battle for Stuy Town, and consider the role of the preservation community in the fight for fair housing in New York City.
