FRIENDS' Testimony:
FRIENDS’ Preservation Committee appreciates the Central Park Conservancy’s proposal to establish a master plan to guide future modifications to the Harlem Meer shoreline. Our Preservation Committee does not object to proposed modifications such as the creation of ADA accessible paths or the installation of granite curbs at the water’s edge. We applaud the planting of native aquatic plant species, and removal of invasive plants. We do, however, question the installation of a galvanized steel boardwalk with steel railings that would extend over the water near the southern shoreline of the Meer. We believe this deviates too sharply from Olmsted’s vision for a naturalistic landscape design and we urge the applicants to reconsider this aspect of the proposal.
