The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has rejected FRIENDS' August 2024 request to landmark the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary in New York City. The church, built in 1893 and renovated in 1917, has served the German and Slovak immigrant communities. Despite its historical and cultural significance, the LPC concluded that the building does not meet the criteria for individual landmark designation due to the church's "modest scale," "narrow mid-block site," and "common architectural style.”

This decision to deny landmark status for the Church of St. Elizabeth is a missed opportunity to preserve a vital piece of Yorkville history. To learn more about the church's rich past and its cultural significance, click here. Stay tuned for updates.
