The Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary at 213-215 East 83rd Street is a significant cultural and architectural landmark in Yorkville. Originally serving German immigrants as the Second Immanuel German Evangelical Lutheran Church, it later became a cornerstone for the Slovakian community as St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Both congregations migrated from the Lower East Side, bringing their languages and cultures to the neighborhood. The church played a vital role in these communities, offering spiritual guidance and a sense of belonging. Additionally, it pioneered accessibility for the deaf community under the leadership of Msgr. Patrick P. McCahill, becoming a center for social interaction and empowerment.
Architecturally, the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary is a prominent Gothic Revival building that stands out in the Yorkville neighborhood. The building's striking blend of Victorian Gothic and Roman Catholic styles, combined with its prominent location, makes it a visually striking and historically important part of the Yorkville landscape. Its unusual architectural style, blending traditional Catholic iconography with maritime motifs, reflects the diverse communities it has served.
The beloved Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary is in jeopardy as it is threatened by deconsecration and redevelopment, which could erase a significant piece of Yorkville’s history. However, its large size and central location offer an opportunity for adaptive reuse that preserves its character while serving new purposes. This would allow the building to continue as a vital part of the community and celebrate its role in Yorkville’s immigrant heritage.
FRIENDS of the Upper East Side Historic Districts urgently appealed to the Landmarks Commission to protect Yorkville's architectural and cultural heritage by proposing individual landmark designation for the Church through a Request for Evaluation.
