FRIENDS' Testimony:
FRIENDS appreciates the initiative of the applicant to propose a consistently-applied Master Plan for the windows of this Renaissance Revival apartment building. We also applaud the decision to maintain the detailed trim, an element that is missing from some of the windows. While the existing six-over-one configuration is described at the designation report as possibly historic, we have found photographic evidence, dated from 1933, from the Museum of the City of New York collection that shows six-over-six windows throughout the building. The photo is included on the written version of this testimony.
While we appreciate the applicant maintaining one of the sashes multi-light, FRIENDS’ Preservation Committee believes that original historic six-over-six configuration is the most appropriate and preferable for this Master Plan. So many of the Park Avenue buildings have already lost this layer of architectural detail by replacing their historic windows with single pane glazing in the name of uniformity, it would be most unfortunate to include 969 Park in this list.
