Yorkville Clock 1501 Third Avenue New York NY
THEN
When watches were expensive to own, sidewalk clocks performed an important public service for working class New Yorkers. This two-faced black and gold gem, a New York City Landmark, dates to 1898, when jeweler Adolph Stern opened a shop at 1508 Third Avenue, near 85th Street. Taking the form of an oversized pocket watch with a winding crown and bow, it was manufactured by the E. Howard Clock Company of Boston, with identical models extant in Orange, California, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Moved across the avenue in 1923, the clock was restored with funds raised by the Friends of the Upper East Side in 1999.
