THEN

The NYC ferry has been a fan favorite to get around NYC, connecting different boroughs together. In 2020, the Upper East Side and Astoria launched a ferry route connecting the two. Which isn’t the first time the two neighborhoods were connected. In 1870, William Steinway opened a piano factory in Astoria, most of his workers lived in Yorkville commuting back and forth on the 92nd street Ferry dubbing it as the “Piano Ferry”. By 1920 the ferry was under NYC control after it lost money from the opening of the Queensboro Bridge (now the Ed Koch Bridge). However, in 1936, Robert Moses thought the ferry was redundant and got rid of it to make way for the new FDR Drive. And although the original ferry is gone, the factory still stands-and still making pianos, people can now use the new 90th street ferry to get to Astoria.
