Lexington Candy Shop 1226 Lexington Avenue New York NY
THEN
This venerated luncheonette opened in 1925. Housed in a two-story brick structure designed by Silvio Minoli, it displays the original enameled signs advertising soda and candy above the angled entrance. The interior, which features a soda fountain with spinning stools and a zig zag terrazzo floor, probably dates to the 1950s. Serving Yorkville for nearly a century, the original menu offered customers such familiar fare as sandwiches, omelets, sundaes, and a “chocolate egg shake,” better known as an egg cream.
