THEN
With prohibition’s end in December 1933, wine and liquor stores began to open throughout the Upper East Side. There has been a liquor store in this 1880s building since 1934, when Kues & Strasburger opened. Julius Braun, a Polish immigrant, took over the business in 1952. He commissioned the store’s marvelous green and red neon sign, which the current owner has retained (and maintained) since 1995.
