Helen Frankenthaler studios 173 East 83rd Street New York NY
THEN
During the 1960s, “Color Field” painter Frankenthaler had a second floor studio in the Vondel, a circa 1900 apartment house at 173 East 83rd Street, corner of Third Avenue. A life-long resident of the Upper East Side, in 1970 she moved her studio a block-and-a-half west, to 117 1⁄2 East 83rd Street, a former stable and carriage house built for John Boulton Simpson, owner of the Estey Piano Company. Frankenthaler painted here for two decades, until 1991. Her landlord was the highly-regarded fashion photographer and Harper’s Bazaar art director Lillian Bassman, who owned the building with Paul Himmel for five decades.
