THEN

The First Hungarian Reformed Church, built in 1916 by well-known Hungarian born architect Emery Roth was were protestant Hungarians came to worship. The church bought three mid block row houses and demolished two leaving one for other uses. The Church designed in Hungarian style not mimicking the traditional gothic or Romanesque style being used. It is also the only church that architect Emery Roth has designed, considering the architect was Jewish and only built synagogues. The church has been a site for Hungarian pride, such as protesting the persecution of Jews in Hungary or against the Soviet occupancy in Hungary. And although the Hungarian population in Yorkville has dwindled down, the church is still active and holds services only in Hungarian. The church also became landmarked in 2019 making the 109 year old church here to stay!
