Terra Cotta

Don't Take it for Granite!

This virtual tour is with artist Susan Tunick, President of Friends of Terra Cotta, and author of several books including the walking tour guide Terra Cotta: Don’t take it for Granite.

Terra cotta takes many forms around New York, even mimicking other building materials like limestone or granite. We’ll explore how to recognize terra cotta and differentiate it from other materials (even when it looks like stone!). It was favored by celebrated architects such as Cass Gilbert (Woolworth Building), Stanford White (Robb Mansion) and Ely Jacques Kahn (2 Park Avenue). Our tour will focus on more than a dozen buildings from the guide book’s second walk, “Murray Hill to Gramercy Park.” It will include building from the 1880s through to Deco structures from the 1920s.
