Grit & Glamour: Southeast Moderns

Join FRIENDS for an exciting new series of walking tours that explore the rich legacy of modernist architecture and design on the Upper East Side.

This often-ignored corner of the Upper East Side contains an intriguing collection of modern institutions and apartment houses. Led by architectural historian Matt Postal, our meandering itinerary considers structures distinguished by glass and white brick, glazed curtain walls, and corduroy concrete -- materials strongly associated with Art Deco, International Style, and Brutalist works. Highlights include the long-time Sutton Square home of architect I.M. Pei, a 1970s office tower that takes inspiration from the Ford Foundation, recent structures associated with Rockefeller University, and Alice Aycock's East River Roundabout, from which we'll view the recently-opened East Midtown Greenway.
