Farther East

Join FRIENDS for an exciting new series of walking tours that explore the rich legacy of modernist architecture and design on the Upper East Side.

Starting in the 1930s, the blocks north of Rockefeller University in the East 60s and East 70s were transformed by waves of new construction. From Gothic Deco and International Style to the present day, architectural historian Matt Postal leads a FRIENDS exploration of Upper East Side moderns. Our route highlights mid-20th and 21st century structures, including tenements refashioned by Harper's Bazaar editor Carmel Snow, the evolving skyscraper campus of New-York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, and OMA's stylish redesign of Sotheby's New York.
