Dali’s Moustache 353 East 83rd Street New York NY
THEN
In the 1960s, free-standing apartment towers began to sprout on the corners of the Upper East Side, many with driveways and raised planting beds. Over time, some have added eye-catching sculptures of varying quality to dress up their front yards, such as the one in front of this 1968 tower. Installed in 2009, this red, welded steel piece is by sculptor Carole Eisner. Titled Dali’s Moustache, it recalls the Surrealist artist who purportedly purchased leeches at Lascoff’s Pharmacy on Lexington Avenue and dined at Hoexters, which has recently reopened on East 82nd Street. This restaurant displays a 1978 mural of bar patrons by Tina Salvesen.
