Brady's Bar 1583 Second Avenue New York NY
NOW
Since the early 1900s, a bar has stood on 82nd and Second Avenue. Originally, it was called McGrath’s, which was allegedly “open” during Prohibition. This changed when an Irishman named Dan Brady bought it in 1961— thus creating Brady’s Bar. In 1991, Mr. Brady signed it over to his son, Dan Jr., who left his work in the world of computers to run the family business. Since then, Brady’s has rebranded into a sports bar rather than an Irish tavern, or as described by Dan Jr., “a blue collar bar in a white collar neighborhood.” His earliest memories of the establishment are from when he was just a toddler and customers would bring him to the candy counter down the street. Though the bar is a hundred years old, people of all ages are welcome to drink, converse, and play games. Dan Jr., who is still passionate about the business, is proud to have followed in his father’s footsteps.
THEN
While the ground floor of the four-story building at the northwest corner of Second Avenue and East 82nd Street has been significantly altered, the residential portion of this brick tenement remains mostly intact. Commissioned, designed, and built by Peter Johnson in 1871. In the beginning of the 20th century, the building owner was Henry Diedel, seemingly one of the officers and organizers of the Yorkville Bank. Founded in 1893, the Yorkville Bank was one of the first institutions of its kind to be established in Upper Manhattan.
