Al Hirshfeld residence 122 East 95th Street New York NY
THEN
It seems fitting that one of New York’s most celebrated theater caricaturists would live on a block where many of the row houses incorporate architectural elements with human faces. Known for his swirling linear style, Hirshfeld was a contributor to The New York Times for seventy-five years, inserting his daughter's name “Nina” into his black-and-white drawings every Sunday. A theater on West 45th Street in Times Square is named for him and his adjustable barber chair and wood drawing table, where he created “virtually all of his work,” are on display at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
