Join FRIENDS and George Candler, AIA, Associate Vice President for Planning and Construction at Rockefeller University, for a special walking tour of the university’s campus—one of the most compelling examples of mid-century modern design on the Upper East Side.
Architects Harrison & Abramovitz, along with landscape architect Daniel Kiley, brought a masterful approach to the 1957–1958 expansion of the Rockefeller University campus. Designed according to the principles of International Style modernism, the project introduced a remarkable collection of five new buildings and transformed the existing Beaux-Arts campus into a cohesive modernist composition. Rockefeller University was profiled in the 2001 exhibition Modern Architecture on the Upper East Side: Landmarks of the Future, which highlighted the campus alongside other now-lost or altered modernist buildings such as the Beekman Theater Block (Fellheimer & Wagner, 1952), Cinema I and II (Abraham W. Geller Associates, 1962), the Group Residence for Young Adults (Horace Ginsbern, 1968), and the Richard Feigen Gallery (Hans Hollein, 1969). Today, the Rockefeller University campus stands as an important case study in urban campus design and offers a unique perspective on the modern architectural heritage of New York City.
