THEN

Founded in 1893 by Randolph Guggenheimer and Oswald Ottendorfer, among others, this four-story bank building was designed by Robert Maynicke in 1905. Of particular note are the cast bronze entrance doors fabricated by the John Polachek Bronze Company in Long Island City. Added as part of a 1922-23 expansion, these double-sided doors incorporate the bank’s initials and allegorical figures accompanied by symbols of industry and thrift, such as a beehive and locomotive. Sold in 1988 and converted to retail space, the unused air rights were transferred to the adjacent apartment tower, which projects slightly over the former bank building. The Yorkville Bank was designated a New York City Landmark in 2012. Should time allow, go inside and view the columns from the original banking hall.
