Fire Patrol 4 113 East 90th Street New York NY
THEN
Fire Patrol 4 was constructed in 1877. Commissioned by the New York Board of Fire Underwriters, a private organization that worked in tandem with New York City’s fire department to protect insured properties from water and smoke damage. Designed with Neo-Grec features, including an incised keystone and elaborate brickwork, it has a single apparatus bay, as well as a rear structure that was originally used as a stable. Fire Patrol 4 disbanded in 1941 and the building became the American Alpine Club, an organization devoted to mountain climbing. The library and reading room was said to contain extensive “resources documenting pre-WWI culture in the European Alps.” Later occupied by the Alan Stone Gallery, 113 East 90th Street is now a private residence.
