Mark Rothko residence 118 East 95th Street New York NY
THEN
East 95th Street, part of the Carnegie Hill Historic District, has many fine late 19th century row houses, including the former home of abstract painter Mark Rothko. Born in Russia, now Latvia, he purchased this 1888 Queen Anne style residence in 1960, at the height of his creativity and lived here with his wife “Mell” during his first major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1961 and the birth of their second child. They separated in 1964 and Rothko moved to his studio on East 69th Street, where he ended his life in 1970.
