Without protection, the special character of our Upper East Side neighborhood could disappear. FRIENDS of the Upper East Side fights to keep our neighborhood vibrant, unique and livable.
Please consider a gift so that our quality of life will not be heedlessly destroyed.
Never has your leadership, and your support, been more important. Here are two buildings on the endangered list:
- They’re trying to demolish a landmark. The owners of the City & Suburban First Avenue Estate are continuing their effort to demolish two landmark buildings, claiming economic hardship. If their plans are successful it could set a precedent for other developers to try to do the same to landmarks anywhere in the city.
- Saving the Park Avenue Christian Church and Parish House at 85th and Park Avenue. Designed by eminent architects Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson, this beautiful church is an intact, Gothic Revival-style complex constructed in 1911. Inspired by La Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, the church boasts a 70-foot spire and exquisite stained-glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Extell Development has submitted plans to demolish the parish house and in its place build a mammoth 16-story residential tower cantilevering over the church building. If prompt action is not taken this rare treasure could be lost forever.
